What to Expect
Once your divorce lawyer is hired, you have expectations, realistic or not you perceive should take place, and how fast. Pressuring your divorce lawyer generally does not produce a positive outcome. It will result in higher attorney fees and a dissatisfied outcome.
As your divorce consultant, there is no pressure or expectation from me or to me. I simply guide you on how to effectively approach your divorce, and above all, keeping your emotions at bay. Your greatest enemy are your emotions, which you must be able to neutralize, otherwise, your financial resources will quickly dissipate, as will your emotional harmony. In a non-stressful arena, you and I are able to discuss many issues, such as financial resources, where assets may be hidden, and best of all, obtain documents that prove financial resources and income, before they miraculously disappear. Getting the upper hand on financial information is critical, so that the information is analyzed by an expert of your choosing, in anticipation of filing your divorce complaint.
Perhaps your expectations are far fetched. You’ll need someone who has experience, but neutral to give you the facts and what a potential outcome may look like. Instead of looking for a “gun-slinging” divorce attorney, who may not give you an honest answer about the realities of your case, I will give you an honest opinion of what to expect. Obviously, nothing is guaranteed, but at a minimum, you learn about the process and proofs a court will need for you to be successful.
Organizing documents and ideas is crucial so that you know the strength and weakness of your case, and that of your spouse. In a typical divorce case, attorneys have hunches and certain expectations, but it takes them time to develop their strategy, which may be elusive each step of the way. Brainstorming the multitude of ideas and issues is advantageous, since it helps you streamline your case and your approach to your divorce case.
An advantage of first developing divorce strategies before filing for divorce, is that hopefully you learn to focus on the issues and not be controlled by your disdain for your spouse. By the time you hire your divorce lawyer, you should have a better understanding and exercise control over the emotional turmoil that may come your way. However, there are certain pieces of information needed to establish your case. It is anticipated, but not guaranteed that when you are ready to hire your lawyer, you’ll have in an organized fashion every document your divorce lawyer will need to prove your case before the court.
